Do the economy-class seats in the front of airplanes really have more legroom?

I read an online guide with travel tips that said the seats in the front of planes have more legroom…assuming the writer wasn’t an idiot who didn’t realize she was talking about business class, is this really true? (or does it depend on the airline?)

Actually they do. But if your on one of those planes which has a private tv for every seat I prefer not to sit in the front row.

Yes, this is true. They are referring to the bulkhead seats, which are the first row of the economy class (ONLY the first row). There are no seats ahead of it, only a wall (bulkhead) separating the economy from the first/business class. Therefore, they give you another 8-10 inches of legroom. I have only flown in one of these seats once, and it was pretty nice…if I remember correctly, though, you can’t have a bag in front of you, everything HAS to go in the overhead bins. I don’t know if this is only for takeoff and landing, or if it is the whole flight. A minor inconvenience, but worth it for the legroom.

No, it’s not just the bulkhead row that has extra legroom. Some airlines do have 2 different classes of economy seats, 1 of them having more leg room. Like someone else said, United Airlines is one of these airlines…and it’s called Economy Plus. It’s enough to make a difference for comfort, and worth the small fee to sit in these seats. Business class seating is something entirely different.

The bulkhead seats or the seat at the very front of the cabins normally do have more legroom, and on larger planes like 747′s there are two economy class sections with bulkheads in both sections, and some airlines do offer premium economy seating with more legroom for more money of course. Be aware that bulkheads are usually where they will seat people with babies as there are often fold-up tables for bassinets, and the armrests are fixed, if you have an empty seat next to you, you can’t take advantage of the extra room as this where the tray tables are stored. There are advantages and disadvantages to bulkhead seats, personally I like them.

Depends on the airline. I know that the US Airways planes have more room in rows 4-9 on the airbus fleet. However row 9 does not recline as it is in front of the exit.
